Chesapeake Public Library is pleased to offer wireless Internet access at all of our Libraries. Below are brief instructions for use and answers to some questions you might have about using wireless at the Library.
How can I use wireless Internet at the Library? Chesapeake Public Library offers Wi-Fi access using standard IEEE 802.11 b/g/n connectivity. Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the wireless network. If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, you can install a WiFi-compatible network device. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library's network.
Is my information safe while using wireless?
Your information is NOT protected while using wireless, unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.) Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information.
Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
Wireless users agree to abide by the the Library's Internet Public Use Policy & Guidelines which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library's Internet service. During periods of peak usage, download bandwidth may be reduced or "shaped" to ensure quality service to all users.

§ 42.1-36.1. Power and duty of library boards and certain governing bodies regarding acceptable Internet use policies.
A. Every (i) library board established pursuant to § 42.1-35 or (ii) governing body of any county, city, or town that, pursuant to § 42.1-36, has not established a library board pursuant to § 42.1-35, shall establish an acceptable use policy for the Internet designed to (a) prohibit use by library employees and patrons of the library's computer equipment and communications services for sending, receiving, viewing, or downloading illegal material via the Internet, (b) prevent access by library patrons under the age of 18 to material that is harmful to juveniles, and (c) establish appropriate measures to be taken against persons who violate the policy. For libraries established under § 42.1-33, the policy shall also require the selection, installation and activation of, on those computers that are accessible to the public and have Internet access, a technology protection measure to filter or block Internet access through such computers to child pornography as defined in §18.2-374.1:1, obscenity as defined in § 18.2-372, and, with respect to minors, materials deemed harmful to juveniles as defined in § 18.2-390. Such policy shall provide that a person authorized by the library board shall disable or otherwise bypass the technology protection measure required by this section at the request of a patron to enable access for bona fide research or other lawful purposes. The policy required by this section shall be posted online; however, if the library does not have a website, the policy shall be available to the public upon request.
The library board or the governing body may include such other terms, conditions, and requirements in the library's policy as it deems appropriate, such as requiring written parental authorization for Internet use by juveniles or differentiating acceptable uses between elementary, middle, and high school students.
B. The library board or the governing body shall take such steps as it deems appropriate to implement and enforce the library's policy which may include, but are not limited to, (i) the use of software programs designed to block access by (a) library employees and patrons to illegal material or (b) library patrons under the age of 18 to material that is harmful to juveniles or (c) both; (ii) charging library employees to casually monitor patrons' Internet use; or (iii) installing privacy screens on computers that access the Internet. For libraries established under § 42.1-33, the library board or governing body shall direct such libraries to select and install on those computers that are accessible to the public and have Internet access a technology protection measure as required by the policy established pursuant to subsection A. No state funding shall be withheld and no other adverse action taken against a library by the Librarian of Virginia or any other official of state government when the technology protection measure fails, provided that such library promptly has taken reasonable steps to rectify and prevent such failures in the future.
Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?
Yes. To search the Catalog, click on Catalog from the home page. To access electronic databases, click on the Services tab, then Research for a complete listing of online databases.
Can I print while using wireless?
Printing is only available internally while onsite in our facilities. This is currently available only at our Central Library location, but will be available at other locations in the near future.
Step 1) If you are a first time user:
- Click Here for Windows 2000/XP/7 users
- Click HERE Here for Mac OSX Users
- Click Yes to download and Run.
- A small window will appear on the bottom right corner of your desktop.
- Click on Login, and then enter your library card number and PIN.
- At this point, any print job you submit to the "Wireless Printer" can be retrieved at the Print Release Station.
Step 2) If you are a returning user:
- Go to Start-->Programs--> Wireless Library Print System --> Wireless Print System
- A small window will appear on the bottom right corner of your desktop.
- Click on Login. Then Login with your Library Card Number and PIN.
- At this point, any print job you submit from your device can be retrieved at the Print Release Station.
Uninstalling Print Module from your laptop:
If you no longer need Library Wireless printing and are ready to uninstall the print module from your laptop: Windows Users, Go to Start --> Programs --> Wireless Library Print System --> Uninstall Wireless Library Print System. This will completely remove the print module from your wireless device.
Mac Users, simply to uninstall the application, you only have to drag them to the Trash
Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
No, the library's network is open to all visitors. No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required.
Can the library help me configure my computer?
Since everyone's computer is different, each person is responsible for knowing how to configure their own equipment. Some helpful tips are included on this page. The Chesapeake Public Library System cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software.
General Configuration Information for all systems
NOTE: The following instructions are general guidelines and require that you understand how to configure and restore the settings of your own computer. It is best to try to use the Internet before attempting any of the changes suggested on this page.
Wireless Card Settings: Use the software that came with your wireless card or computer to configure the settings and to verify a connection to the library’s wireless network.
-SSID (network name) = CPWL1
-WEP = disable WEP encryption
-Mode or Network Type = Infrastructure mode or Access Point
Windows 2000 & XP 1. From Control Panel, select "Network and Dial-up Connections" or "Network and Internet Connections > Internet Connections." 2. Right-click on “Wireless Network Connection” or “Local Area Connection” and click Properties. 3. Locate the Internet TCP/IP protocol and get into its Properties. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter. 4. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and “Obtain DNS server address automatically." 5. For XP, right click on “Wireless Network Connection” and select “View Available Wireless Networks.” Select the name of the wireless network available at the library and click “Connect.”
Windows VISTA If you have a mobile PC, you can see a list of available wireless networks, and then connect to one of those networks, no matter where you are. The wireless networks appear only if your computer has a wireless network adapter installed and the adapter is turned on. 1. Open Connect to a Network by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Connect to. 2. In the Show list, click Wireless. You'll see a list of the wireless networks currently available. 3. Click a network, and then click Connect. If you don't see the library's network, click Set up a connection or network. A list of options will appear that includes manually searching for and connecting to a network, as well as creating a new network connection.
Windows 7 If you have a laptop, you can see a list of available wireless networks, and then connect to one of those networks, no matter where you are. The wireless networks appear only if your computer has a wireless network adapter and driver installed and the adapter is enabled. 1. Open Connect to a Network by clicking the network icon ( or ) in the notification area. The notification area is usually on the lower right corner of your desktop. 2. In the list of available wireless networks, click a network, and then click Connect.
Mac (OS X) 1. Select: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network button. 2. Select TCP/IP tab and Configure "Using DHCP." 3. Above the TCP/IP tab, you may need to Configure via "AirPort" or other wireless (WiFi) ethernet. 4. Leave Domain Name Servers and Search Domains blank. 5. Ensure that "Connect to last known network" is not checked.
Internet Explorer Tips:
Please note that depending on your version of software, there may be variations in the procedures. 1. From Control Panel, select Internet Options > Connections tab. 2. If you also have a dial-up connection, it should not be set to "Always dial my default connection." 3. LAN Settings should be "Automatically detect settings" and leave the Proxy server settings blank.
